Al-Balad: Historic Jeddah

Al-Balad, roughly translating to "The Town," is Jeddah's historic district and a UNESCO World Heritage site established in the 7th century. It served as the primary gateway for pilgrims traveling by sea to Makkah and developed a unique architectural style characterized by multi-story coral-stone townhouses and intricate 'rawashin' (wooden lattice window boxes).

Is Al-Balad safe to visit at night?

Al-Balad is extremely safe and arguably most atmospheric after 8:00 PM when the heat dissipates and the local shops (souqs) come alive. You can wander through the Narrow Alleys of the Gabel Street Market, visit the historic Nassif House, and drink traditional Saudi coffee in one of the many restored heritage cafes. The scent of agarwood incense and the call to prayer echoing off the coral walls create a deeply sensory experience found nowhere else in the Gulf.
